Tootgarook Swamp A wetland of international significance
Shire moves to nominate the Tootgarook Swamp a Ramsar listed site

An Intermediate Egret alighting on the swamp
After a failed application to develop 9 St Elmo's Close, West Rosebud a part of the northern Tootgarook Swamp in West Rosebud and the community campaign against that and any further development requiring the filling in of wetlands, the shire has indicated in a letter from planning manager Angela Hughes that they are now in consultation with both federal and state authorities with a view to the listing of the greater swamp as a Wetland of International Significance
Shire also indicates that they will convene a reference group to help guide the processes and policies
While most of the swamp is in private hands and land in the northern end is zoned residential or industrial, council has power through the planning scheme to fully protect this national asset from further "reclaiming" and threatening processes due to land use
The means will need to be found to acquire the appallingly inappropriately zoned land from the current developer ownership
